COVID-19 vaccinations will be delivered from two pharmacies in Christchurch and Poole – making them among the first in the country to do so.

Vaccinations will start on Thursday 21 January and those eligible will be invited to attend – please do not turn up and expect to receive a jab if you have not been invited as you will be putting yourself and other people at risk and potentially disrupting the flow of patients.

Anyone who is invited and does not want to travel can wait to be called forward by their local GP-led local vaccination service. Being invited to get the jab at a pharmacy will not be the only opportunity.

Across Dorset, vaccinations are being delivered as part of a phased roll out from over 20 sites including GP-led services, roving teams for care homes and the house-bound, and the large-scale vaccinations centre at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC).

It is anticipated that more pharmacists across the country will come online to offer vaccinations as more supplies become available.

Thousands of people have already received their vaccination in Dorset.

We are delivering the vaccine to the most vulnerable according to national guidance. Please be reassured, the NHS will contact you when it’s your turn.

Christchurch based Mitesh Patel is one of the pharmacists delivering the vaccination in Dorset. He said “To date over 4m vaccinations have been delivered as part of the biggest vaccination programme in the history of the NHS which is an amazing achievement.

Pharmacy teams have been working alongside local partners to be able to play a key role in this programme and I am really pleased to be part of it and help deliver the vaccine safely to those who need it most.”

NHS England and NHS Improvement South West Chief Pharmacist Stephen Brown said: “It’s great to see the first community pharmacies in the South West delivering these life-saving vaccinations, bringing the vaccine out to more places in local communities, making the vaccine more accessible.

“Pharmacies who have worked incredibly hard throughout the pandemic will now play a vital role in delivering the vaccination, supporting the national drive to protect the nation from the virus.

“Pharmacies are well-versed in supporting NHS immunisation programmes and will build on their expertise of providing a safe, efficient service as they do with the flu vaccine every year.”
