GP practices across Dorset will be inviting registered patients to find out their risk of Type 2 Diabetes as part of an ongoing national campaign.

It is estimated that over 41,000 people in Dorset are affected by Type 2 Diabetes so practices are asking selected patients to assess their risk and get in touch if they are concerned.

Those people receiving an SMS will be invited to fill in the Know Your Risk online tool to find out if they are at risk and if so find out what steps they can take to lower it.

In addition, targeted social media posts will extend the invite to those people considered at risk in areas of high prevalence.

Dr Martin Longley, Diabetes GP Lead for Dorset said “If you get an SMS or post in your social media feed asking you to complete the Know Your Risk tool, don’t worry – this isn’t a diagnosis and we want to be clear about that – it is simply an invitation to find out if you are at risk and if so, what you can do about it. Diabetes is a common condition that can increase your risk of getting serious problems so we would encourage anyone who receives an SMS to visit the site and complete the short survey.”

There are a number of risk factors which can affect your risk of developing type 2 diabetes including age, family history, being overweight and high blood pressure.
